"Xylem" combines tube forms with hollow ball elements to make a delicate, but expressive piece. Note the industrial texture impressed into each of the legs, as well as the "spores" growing from each of the "buds".
I created this piece ten years ago, but now it evokes the image of Covid-19 cells. Obviously this is purely coincidental, but it gives it the piece meaning that makes it timely for display during the pandemic.
"Xylem" are plant vascular tissues that convey water and dissolved minerals from the roots to the rest of the plant and also provide physical support. I liked the way the word looked and sounded -- I didn't dwell on its scientific accuracy.
