I cannot create art from pencil, pen or brush; I’ve tried. But beauty, form, figures, shapes, and abstracts flash before all of us every day, everywhere. I capture these with my camera, but I love to manipulate the image. In the darkroom this was often a tragedy, put with Photoshop, the vision in my head is transformed from what the camera captured. My mother started me on the road to photography by giving me her little black box Kodak camera that held a twelve-print roll of black and white film when I was in elementary school in New Orleans. Then she took me into the dark room and showed me the magic of printing. I was the high school annual roaming photographer getting those candid shots in De Ridder high school in 1968-69. In Midland, Tx in 1975. I took my first photography course, but back in the 70’s photography was in the School of Journalism. In the 80’s, I built my own darkroom and learned how to alter images. I especially liked high contrast film to create black and whites with bold graphic designs more than just photos. I wrote pieces for Texas Highways and Texas Parks and Wildlife. They paid me more for the photograph they published, than the written word. In 2008, I began to give photo calendars to clients in my oil industry geological profession. Many friends encouraged me to show my work at our local art center in Corpus Christi. The Art Center staff helped me start on a second career in photographic arts by providing an outlet for my work; but most importantly, encouraging me to participate. Since then, I have been encouraged by artists that I admire, to show my work around the Coastal Bend. I’ve enjoyed the exposure that Port Aransas and Rockport have given me. These groups are so encouraging and supportive and quite the ego boosters. I am a member of the Guild of Fine Art photography, associated with the Art Center of Corpus Christi. What a great group of people that “see” so much that I walk by every day. Ed Portis, our guide and Zen photographer, says it best, “Fine art is expressive of something emotionally meaningful”. Thanks, Ed, for your venue and leadership. Not everything I do is fine art. I document as well: https://www.flickr.com/photos/161681815@N05/
