DON HAZLITT
Born and raised in Stockton, California. Don graduated from Vermont College, Union Institute & University. He received an MFA in Visual Art 2007 from California State University, Sacramento, CA; an MA Art 1973 from Sonoma State University, Rohnert Park, CA.; a BA in Art 1971 from San
Joaquin Delta College, Stockton, CA.; and an AA in Humanities 1969.
Don Hazlitt’s work has had a romantic interest in early modernism for many years. It has always seemed that the 20th century raced through numerous artistic movements and configurations leaving us here in the 21st century with many fertile areas that can be gleaned further.
Many of Don’s paintings pay homage to cubism, using a semi-cubist style and formal compositional structure. On a personal level these small-scale paintings often refer back to his earlier bas-relief painted constructions: cycling such images as rocks, stuffed animal ears, and lumpy-bumpy biomorphic bulbous, phallic shapes. They all give the viewer a hint into the humorous intension of the works, where you can see the imaginative connection between the 2-dimensional work and the 3-D constructions, while enjoying the interconnection between the two methods of working. His work is joyful and playful.
