Breakfast at Granny’s was painted during the lockdown, a period when social distancing had suddenly become part of everyday life. Older people, considered especially vulnerable, had to be protected, and for many it was the first time they faced being physically separated from their families. In the painting, a young girl sits at the familiar kitchen table eating her cereal. Granny is nearby in the kitchen, her presence suggested by the pot of jam left on the table. As a child, I never understood why adults chose marmalade or jam on toast for breakfast, it always seemed so dull to me. Why not a bowl of Coco Pops or Honey Nut Loops instead? Although the girl appears to be sitting alone, she is content in the comfort and safety of a place she knows well, even as the world outside feels uncertain.
