The imagery within the figure of my piece, All Possibilites, was inspired by the Vela Supernova Remnant. Embedded within the shredded cloud of expanding supernova debris lie the remnants of the star that created it, the Vela Pulsar. The pulsar emits a jet of high energy particles 3 trillion miles long and 200 billion miles wide that whips around at half the speed of light, like an untended firehose. For the chair the figure sits on I used gold leaf to remind myself of the value of what we already have, of where we are–not in terms of money, but just in terms of existing.
This imagery feels like a perfect metaphor for how I feel now, just sitting and waiting for the unimaginable changes we need. This pandemic and its consequential societal shifts are shaping our future in ways we cannot fully understand and, for me, it is a painful reminder of our mortality and Mother Nature’s need for ecological balance.
