When my kids were young we used to go camping at a nearby lake. I liked to slip out early and slide the canoe into the water, relishing the stillness as the early morning fog danced above the surface. My 4-year-old son began to catch on I was sneaking out, so we snuck out together. If I found a frog or turtle I'd put it in the canoe for him to find. As my daughter got to be 3 or 4, she also realized fun was being had before sunrise and wanted to go too. While the frogs were fine enough, she was more interested in gliding through the lily pads and plucking the biggest lily she could find. The water lilies were magical everytime, luminous in the sunlight and never lasting long after being picked.
