Alex Sutherlin is a transgender visual artist from Lafayette, Louisiana. He primarily creates mixed media pieces often incorporating surrealistic or abstract imagery and automatic writing. Themes such as mental health, spirituality, and identity are frequently found within his pieces. When not creating in some capacity, you can find him playing video games, reading his latest library book, or caring for his pets.

Artist Statement: Most of my pieces involve mixed media elements featuring abstract or surrealistic imagery. I usually start with layers upon layers of stream of consciousness text. This process is very therapeutic for me and often revolves around themes of identity, spirituality, and mental health. On top of the layers of text, I go in with acrylic paint, markers, modeling paste, and any other textured medium I can get my hands on. Palette knives, paint pens, and custom cut brushes are found in my tool kit. For me, my work is the ultimate form of self expression and I try do to so as unapologetically as possible.
