Gabriella Karefa-Johnson, the fashion editor personality who became famous as the first Black woman to style a Vogue cover in 2021. Ms. Wintour asked Ms. Karefa-Johnson where she wanted to be in 10 years. She answered as Ms. Wintour once had- editor in chief of Vogue. Ms. Karefa-Johnson resigned because it was time for her to move on. She wanted to speak for herself and not the instructions she worked for. The photo in the NYT’s article inspired this painting.
