This piece was inspired by Frances Walker-Slocum, a pioneering classical pianist and educator, who passed away. She was the first black female tenured professor at Oberlin College and Conservatory, and a champion of black composers. The sketches of faces in the painting represent the students she taught during her extensive career. “The arts build moral strength and all kinds of inner strength” - Frances Walker-Slocum
