Did you know Columbia has an extensive system of canals? Originally begun in 1820 on the Saluda River, it was later expanded to include a separate canal, called Bull Sluice, north of Columbia Canal on the Broad River. This is a lovely view of that diversion dam on the Broad River.

Pro Tip: You can put in a kayak below the dam and follow the Broad River down to the confluence with the Saluda where the two rivers merge to become the Congaree. This is a great route in May each year when the Spider Lilies bloom!
