Miniature etching
The Wairuna yards are a big empty space framed by wooden posts and gates. The wooden floor slats direct the eye towards the dim interior lit by small glowing openings.
Wairuna near Barraba in north-western NSW has about a dozen stands. It is lit by high up clerestory windows, the light diffused by chaff bags. The roof is a miracle of joinery while unusually the pens have a strong lattice construction.
The woolshed hasn’t been used for a decade or two, but apart from exterior cladding is in pretty good shape. The outside ramp onto the pens has disintegrated and the dipping race at the other end of the building has been filled in.
