Richard Goulis is a multimedia and performance artist based in Rhode Island with a background in television production. Goulis graduated from RISD with a concentration in film and video. An active member of the local arts community, he is responsible for the project NetWorks Rhode Island, a documentary series on local artists. He also works with Big Nazo Puppets, an international performance group based in Providence. His work is held in the permanent collection of the RISD Museum. He founded the Worcester Artist Group in Massachusetts and the Harwood Art Center in New Mexico.

Goulis’ sometimes absurd pieces take inspiration from the Dadaists but are firmly situated in the 21st century. This wax sculpture of a TV remote was part of Goulis’s 2013 solo show at Bannister Gallery You Were Just Mine. The remote was featured in a performance piece titled TV Clock. The text for the show cites Goulis’ practice of recontextualizing objects and describes this wax TV remote as a deity. This show represents a transition between Goulis’ previous political works and more recent focus on his immediate reality, including themes of technology and humans’ relationships to entertainment and materials. You were Just Mine consisted of multiple sculptures and installations, including repurposed objects such as a television plastered in “World’s Greatest Mother” placards and a mannequin “corpse” wrapped in and punctured by American flags.
