Lloyd Martin is an American painter born in Providence in the late fifties, whose abstract work is shaped by his daily observations of architecture and the urban landscape around his upbringing and in his studio. Using photography as a starting point, he develops paintings that explore structure, rhythm, and color without directly representing specific places.

His compositions often reflect a careful balance between order and variation, where open grids, layered forms, and shifting lines suggest both movement and stability. Color plays a central role, with subtle transitions and contrasts that bring depth and energy to the work. While rooted in abstraction, Martin’s paintings carry a strong sense of place, shaped by his interest in architectural form.

A 1980 graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design, Martin has shown his work widely and has been recognized with fellowships in both painting and drawing. His approach emphasizes process and thoughtful decision-making, allowing each painting to evolve through a series of visual choices and responses. He continues to create and display his work today at the NüArt Gallery in Los Angeles, California.
