Robert Collins, born in 1953, is a painter and educator whose work explores abstracted interpretations of landscape through a focus on two-dimensional design, verticality, and personal mark-making. He earned his BFA in 1976 and his MFA in 1978 from Boston University, studying under influential artists including Philip Guston, Reed Kay, and James Weeks. His paintings reflect a deep engagement with the natural world through a modern visual language emphasizing - form, movement, and spiritual resonance.
Collins’ professional background bridges fine art and industrial design. As a Senior Designer at Hasbro Toy Company in the 1980s, he helped develop iconic lines such as My Little Pony and Jem. He later served as Senior Design Director for both American Manufacturing and Bradford Novelty Company.
In parallel with his studio practice, Collins has taught drawing and painting for decades at institutions including Rhode Island College, the School of the Museum of Fine Arts (Boston), the Danforth Museum School, and others throughout New England. His work has been exhibited here at the Bannister Gallery as well as the Bernard Toale Gallery, Bromfield Gallery, DeBlois Gallery, the Danforth Museum, and more. His paintings were shown along with other artists in Embodied: The Figure in Paint exhibition in 2014.
Now based in Rockport, Massachusetts, Collins runs the Robert Collins Gallery, where he continues his life-long investigation into the expressive potential of abstract painting rooted in the structure of landscape and personal design sensibilities.
