Harley Bartlett is a Rhode Island–based painter and muralist whose work reflects the traditions of American representational painting, with a strong focus on the landscapes and coastal life of New England. Educated at the University of Pennsylvania and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, he has sustained a professional career since the 1980s, exhibiting widely throughout the region.
The works in the gallery's permanent collection, generously donated by collectors Robert and Marie Petrarca, highlight Bartlett’s primary subjects: rural farmland, quiet country roads, and maritime environments. These works feature harbors, sailboats, farmland, and quiet seasonal landscapes. Animals and figures, such as fishermen, birds, and deer appear throughout, adding a sense of everyday life. Rather than depicting exact locations, many of these scenes feel familiar and reflective, shaped by both observation and memory.
Working primarily in oil on canvas, Bartlett emphasizes atmosphere, light, and mood over fine detail and uses painterly brushwork and careful composition to guide the viewer through each scene. Across both land and sea, his paintings evoke a reflective and nostalgic view of New England that focuses on its natural beauty and the quiet presence of human activity within it.
