Cristin Searles works with textiles, sewing, and beading to create ethereal sculptures and installations that evoke themes of “beauty, care, delicacy and joy, sensuality and space.” She received her BA in Studio Art from Hamilton College in Clinton, NY, and an MFA in Sculpture from the School of Visual Arts, New York, NY.
Searles began sculpting fabric while working as a costume designer during graduate school. Textiles come with the connotation of functionality, particularly relating to the body, which Searles acknowledges in her playful and sensual references to the body. Botanical and other biological forms are also a recurring motif in her work. For example, for her 2006 solo exhibition at Bannister Gallery, Searles installed a series of breast-like cones of organza (titled Romance, 2004) which sprawl across the wall like pink barnacles.
