Mapless Blue No. 2 was created during a two-week ocean transit from Hawaiʻi to Fiji in 2019. Inspired by seafloor mapping in the heart of the Pacific Ocean, the painting reflects the hidden landscapes that lie beneath the surface—vast, largely unseen, and only gradually revealed through exploration.
During the voyage, I became fascinated by the process of bathymetric mapping. The world's oceans are broadly mapped using satellite measurements of subtle variations in gravity at the ocean's surface. These low-resolution maps suggest the presence of large underwater features through gradients of blue, but they cannot resolve the finer details of the seafloor. As a research vessel passes over these areas, high-resolution sonar transforms what was once only an impression into a richly detailed landscape.
It is this moment of revelation that inspired Mapless Blue No. 2—the passage of a single mapping line across an unknown expanse, bringing hidden topography into focus. The painting explores the intersection of science and abstraction, inviting viewers to consider both the immensity of the ocean and the beauty of what remains undiscovered.
