The WIPEOUT Series expresses the muted sight of the wave’s energy during a wipeout. It’s timed chaos that can pass in a few seconds and it can be a spiritual experience. The artworks communicate the feeling of being underwater, fast and active, in a non-spatial relationship to what is up or what is down.
The Wipeout Series: A surfing wipeout is a metaphor for life and the chaos/uncertainty/powerlessness that can inevitably arise, and this is certainly true during the COVID-19 pandemic. Both surfing and life’s challenges take courage, knowledge, and trust. Sometimes you fall, and when you do, know there may be unpleasant turbulence. Relax, hold your breath, and let it pass. Eventually, you will emerge. The wipeout is the most vulnerable part of surfing, and this series celebrates having the courage to fall.
