Migdalia Perez, 47, of Gardner MA was a woman who treasured her family- including four children and four grandchildren, and was loved in her community. She was born in Puerto Rico, loved celebrations and was referenced as a true GUERRERA in her family's eyes. From the images and stories I could gather online I created this portrait to reflect both her ferocity and her gentleness. The candle references the vigil her community held just after her death and as they continue to bring the issue of domestic violence to the forefront. She died at the hands of an intimate who she had sought protection from in the days just prior to her murder. She was denied extended protections. May her memory be a blessing. Rest in Power.
This quilt block was created as part of the @Sew4justice_sjsa Blocks of Remembrance Project. It will be sewn together in a banner along with other names of other victims of violence.
