There is a widening up between our inner and outer selves as a result of our rational, scientific, and technological thinking. We need symbols because the split between our conscious, subconscious and cosmo-conscious mind. As the mind explores symbol it is lead to realm of understanding which lies beyond the reach of reason. The human who is not evolving spiritually does not remain stationary, he sinks down. It is the natural law of increase and decrease -- life -- generation -- de-generation.
