The Colossal Statue of Bahubali Being Anointed
The Jain site of Shravanabelagola is renowned for its 58.8-foot tall monolithic statue of Bahubali, a warrior turned ascetic who renounced the world and performed austerities in the kayotsarga position and achieved liberation. The statue, erected in 983, is anointed every twelve years in a ceremony attended by scores of Jain pilgrims from throughout India. These photos from the most recent “Grand Consecration” in 2018 show the statue being anointed with various colored liquids (milk, saffron watered, sandalwood paste, coconut water, turmeric etc) poured from a scaffolding erected for the occasion.
