Temples at Shatrunjaya
The temple complexes on top of the Shatrunjaya hills are the focus of one of the most important pilgrimages in Shvetambara Jain tradition. The picturesque grouping of temple spires, domes and colonnades is globally renowned, as evidenced by Marianne North’s painting of the site. As many as one thousand shrines are packed into the two summits of the site, which has been built, renovated and rebuilt numerous times in a variety of styles since the 11th century. The main temple complexes are called tunks or enclosures formed by a main temple and subsidiary shrines enclosed within a wall. The highest and most important point is the southern summit with the Adishvar temple, which pilgrims are advised to circumambulate thrice (on the plan it is at the bottom left).
