Shantinatha Basadi
Jinanathapura, a village north of Chandragiri hill at Shravanabelagola was founded in 1117 CE by Gangaraja, prime minister of Hoysala king Vishnuvardhana. The Shantinatha temple lies in the heart of this village and was commissioned by Recimayya, the dandanayaka of the Hoysala king Ballala II (r. 1173-1220).
A renowned example of the Hoysala style of construction, the flat roofed Shantinatha Basadi stands on a platform and features exceptionally detailed carved decoration around its exterior. Large niches bear standing images of the Jina’s Parshva, Suparshva and Nemi accompanied by attendant figures. The interior, consisting of a covered mandapa, a vestibule, and a single shrine, is relatively plain.
