Saavira Kambada Basadi
Housing about 20 Jain temples, Mudabidri is an important center of pilgrimage for Digambara Jains. Dedicated to Chandraprabha, this basadi/basti at Mudabidri has three superimposed sanctums as well as double storeyed halls and a fifty foot monolithic manastambha. The two upper sanctums remain empty though originally the temple was believed to house 24 sculptures in image chambers across the three levels. Renowned for its exterior colonnade of 1000 pillars and sloping roof designed to deflect the rain, Saavira Kambada Basadi remains one of the most important Jain temples in Karnataka and southern India as a whole. Numerous stupa-like structures near the temple hall hold the remains of dedicated monks, an unusual feature that parallels the importance of stupa culture in Buddhist practices.
