Jain Temples Before (left) and After Restoration and Modernization (right)
The eastern sector of the fort of Deogarh has nearly 31 Jaina temples and is important for the study of Jain architecture in central India. Small in scale, either square or rectangular on plan, these temples comprise a hall with or without projecting a cella at the back. They generally have a front verandah and a flat roof except for two with curvilinear shikharas. The site yielded a number of sculptures and manastambhas (victory towers that remind the devotee to set aside all pride when entering a temple) and epigraphic records.
