Jain Center of New Jersey, 2012
The Jain Center of New Jersey moved to its present location in 2012. Prior to that it existed at Essex Fells since 1982 and is popularly known as the Caldwell Derasar due to its proximity to the larger town of Caldwell. It continues to serve JCNJ members in a vibrant manner. However, the history of Jains arriving in New Jersey goes back to the 1970s when a small group started getting together to perform prayers and celebrate festivals. Initially activities were held in homes and rented halls till the community gathered funds to establish permanent centers as we see today. Traditional architects from India, the Sompuras, designed the main shrine which has a pendant ceiling and carved marble pillars in the Maru-Gurjara style.
