- Sandstone
- Badami, Karnataka
Located along the western edge of a rocky plateau by the Malprabha river, the site of Badami in Karnataka is a multi-religious site and has three Hindu and one Jain caves dating from the 6th-12th centuries. The earliest caves are associated with the Chaulukyas of Badami (6th to mid-8th century) who also built structural temples at the site. The Digambara Jain cave (early Chaukya with some reliefs added later) is cut into an overhanging cliff and is dedicated to Mahavira. The square columns are carved with images of tirthankaras, and the interior contains several important carvings of Mahavira and other Jinas.
