Detail of a Shrine in Luna Vasahi, Mount Abu
Ministers under the Solankis, Vastupala and Tejapala constructed many Jain shrines, of which Luna Vasahi is the most famous. This image depicts one of the two big ornamental niches outside the hall leading to the main sanctum in the temple. According to the inscription recording the consecration of the niche, it was installed for the religious merit of Tejapala’s second wife Suhadadevi. It displays very fine workmanship and is adorned with figures of Jinas, monks, lay persons and animals. Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth presides over the niche in the top.
