Colossal Tirthankaras, 7th-15th c.
- Sandstone
- Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh
Siddhachal group (Urvah valley towards the NW)
These colossal sculptures are carved into the cliff side of the Urvahi valley towards the northwest of the Gwalior fort. The fort (ca.11th -17th century) is situated on an isolated and flat-topped hill of sandstone that rises 300 feet above the town at the north end. In all there are five groups of rock-cut caves and sculptures at this site and include colossal standing and seated sculptures of the 24 Jinas and Jain deities, some of which, standing in meditative postures, range up to 57 feet in height. These are representative of the Digambara Jain community and were carved over the span of the 15th century with later renovations. Together with the fort and the imposing sculptures, this site is considered one of the most impressive in Northern India.
