Babur Visiting the Urvahshi Valley in Gwalior, painted ca. 1590
- Gouache on paper
- Dhanraj, artist
from Vaki'at-i Baburi (the Memoirs of Babur), originally composed 1528
This artwork depicts the Mughal emperor Babur’s (r. 1526-1530) visit to the Jain temples in Gwalior in 1527 after he conquered the region. Babur ordered the Jain sculptures to be destroyed, but they were restored by Jain patrons in the 18th century. As seen in the painting, while the cliff face is covered with rock-cut sculptures, depicting them completely naked has been avoided and the painting depicts them covering their genitals.
