Akkana Basadi (also known as the “Temple of the Elder Sister” or pronounced as “Basti”) is a Jain temple built in 1181 CE during the reign of Hoysala empire King Veera Ballala II. This remarkable temple was constructed by the devout Jain lady Achiyakka (also called Achala Devi), the wife of Chandramouli, a Brahmin minister in the royal court. Carved from blocks of soapstone, this east facing Hoysala temple features a relatively simple layout of a triple storeyed single shrine and vestibule attached to an enclosed mandapa and an entry hall. The long overhanging prominent porch is supported by elaborate lathe-turned half-pillars.
