A General view of Palitana
Shatrunjaya, one of the most revered sites for the Jains is mentioned in texts since the 5th century but gained prominence in medieval literature which is also when Jains started to build temples at the twin peaks of Shatrunjaya. This temple city houses more than a thousand shrines, built and rebuilt over time. Shatrunjaya holds a special place for Jains because of its close affinity with the first Jina, Adishvar, popularly called Adibuddhaji (i.e Rishabha). It is believed that he delivered his first sermon at Shatrunjaya followed by many others. Apart from featuring in large scale cloth paintings, Shatrunjaya was avidly photographed and painted by British artists. Marianne North, a Victorian artist well-known for her landscapes and botanical paintings, traveled from southern to northern India from 1877 to 1879. Edmund David Lyon, a British photographer took almost 300 photographs of temples and other sites for the Madras and Bombay presidencies of the British Raj.
