This work is a net-like form comprised of handspun paper. I stained the papers with ink, cut them into narrow strips, and spun them into lengths of yarn. Here, the final crocheted form is photographed hanging against a white wall.
I think of this piece as a drawing in space. The act of spinning is like drawing -- the practices even share a core term: drafting. In spinning, that's the pulling apart of fibers before they're twisted together into yarn. I'm thinking about drafting as a starting point, a draft -- a drawing -- to be revised and revisited.
I mined this title from the writings of Anni Albers. In her lecture "Material as Metaphor," she talks about the advice she gives young artists: "you can go anywhere from anywhere." She ends that lecture by talking about the importance of listening to a material, not dominating it. She says, to be truly active, we must be passive and follow the lead of what the material is trying to tell us.
