Festival of Fins
In the summer of 2000, Arts New Orleans' public art program partnered with the Young Leadership Council to produce Festival of Fins, the largest public art display in the city's history and the inaugural exhibition of the Fresh Art Festival. More than 150 artists (drawn from the Visual Artists Registry) designed and painted 210 fiberglas fish for placement on streets in the city's well-traveled business and tourist districts. The project benefited local artists with more than $210,000 in artists' fees.
105 fish were sold at public auction, raising over $550,000 for non-profits in the New Orleans area. In conjunction with this project, the Percent For Art Program added an Artist-in-Residence component in fulfillment of program goals. Four artists worked with community organizations: Kingsley House, Unity for the Homeless, Central City EOC Multi-Purpose Center, and The Green Project, and their constituents, ages 4 - 98, to produce four very distinct and creative fish. The four fish are part of the City of New Orleans' public art collection.
