Mayor Landrieu, Evacuteer.org and Arts New Orleans unveil EvacuSpots
In partnership with Evacuteer.org and Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness, 15 sculptures and 2 signs were installed at 17 EvacuSpots, New Orleans’ designated emergency evacuation locations, to facilitate public transportation during a mandatory evacuation in advance of a Category three or higher hurricane. In collaboration with Arts New Orleans, Evacuteer.org commissioned artist Douglas Kornfeld to create the public art pieces to both beautify neighborhoods and serve as noticeable and memorable markers for the city’s 17 designated evacuation pick-up points. But they are not just art: Their true function is to serve as a meeting point for anyone who can’t evacuate on their own. If you meet at one of these EvacuSpots, someone will come to your location to shuttle you, your family, and pets to the nearest shelter.
