Art in Public Places, 2009 - 2011
In 2009, Arts New Orleans in collaboration with the Joan Mitchell Foundation launched “Art in Public Spaces.” This project was planned as a two-year public exhibition of 10 public artworks as a post-Katrina investment in local artists. Each selected artist would receive a $25,000 commission and would retain ownership of the work following the exhibition.
The Joan Mitchell Foundation was so impressed by the quality and creativity demonstrated in the artist proposals that they doubled the number of projects supported, of which 19 were ultimately realized.
In addition to providing critical support for artists seeking to recover their studios and creative practice in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, “Art in Public Spaces” also laid the groundwork for the Joan Mitchell Foundation’s continued long-term investment in New Orleans culture and artists and resulted in the foundation’s establishment of a permanent location and artist residency program within New Orleans.
Several of the 19 artworks in various locations across the city might remain in place permanently, but others will be dismantled or moved.
