- Digital photograph on archival paper
In 1811, laborer Charles Deslondes led what would be ultimately dubbed the 1811 German Coast Uprising which took place in New Orleans and included more than 500 enslaved people, becoming the largest rebellion of enslaved people in North American history. This assemblage utilizes the visual language of NFL Hall of Fame cases to illuminate this underdiscussed history while additionally exploring “value” as a concept along with the complex history of the fleur-de-lis symbol’s historical and contemporary relationship to African American [male] bodies.
This is a print version of a mixed media series entitled "RAFTERS" which utilizes different New Orleans Saints jerseys bearing the names of enslaved Africans who were a part of the 1811 rebellion.
