Usually when the Black Experience is depicted, the absence of a father figure is a prominent characteristic of our lives. While this absence of positive male figures within the community stems from the ceaseless systemically oppressive structures rooted in American society, this "fatherless" characteristic ignores the many notable Black men in our lives. This photograph conveys not only the necessity of Black men in our community, but also highlights the immense joy their presence contributes, elevating what is known as the Black Experience. Contrary to white belief, Black men are present in our community and dearly loved, too.
