In this piece, the flambeaux and the heavy torch that he carries, lighting the way for paraders, is a metaphor for the mental and emotional burden that often comes with taking the righteous path or carrying hope in the face of adversity. The imagery is also a literal nod to the one particular "contribution" Black people have made to the Mardi Gras traditions. Originally a role fulfilled by enslaved men, the tradition has continued by free will and remains an important element of the parades.
