“Skull & Bone” is the first painting of Scott’s new series Nouveau Orléans: the wave. Nouveau Orléans is a reflection on the dichotomy between the city’s rich captivating culture and the dilemmas associated with contemporary city life. Scott’s painting makes use of the art-historically, based principle of the figure/ground relationship.

The painting depicts masked figures in traditional garb worn by the North Side Skull & Bone Gang. The Skull & Bone Gang’s traditions go back 200 years in New Orleans culture. Scott uses multiple layers of patterns to stimulate the background creating visual movement with the addition of various artistic elements that represent the African influence in which the Skull & Bone Gang was founded.
