Just as a grain of sand in an oyster can create a beautiful pearl, our difficult memories can provide the strength to create beauty from pain. This piece combines native driftwood with hundreds of ceramic “oysters.” The driftwood holds the physical memory of water while the oysters create multiple layers of meaning around an irritating grain of sand. New Orleans has collective trauma it might be tempted to forget; however, it is through the remembrance that we emerge transformed.
