"Current Watermark" is a sculpture created in 1999 by artists Jeremy Jernigan and Steven Kline. This sculpture replaces the Bienville Monument that once was located here. The Bienville monument has been relocated to the intersection of Conti St., Decatur St., and North Peters in the French Quarter.
The design consists of various transportation-related images of brightly colored metal "anchored" in a "pool"of hand cast ceramic tile. It was a collaborative effort between the two artists with Jernegan producing the ceramic elements and Kline creating the metal structure. Images are enlarged and abstracted representations of navigation instruments, gears, wheels, and buoys that appear to be in a pool of water. The artists, recognizing the site as a point of entry into the city, suggest that these images reflect the man-made tools that have made New Orleans grow as a commercial and transportation hub in an area surrounded by water.
