Crochet is a way for me to deliver truth while still leaving space for others to interpret it through the lens of their own unique individual experiences.
One line - one long piece of string - can become anything my imagination can produce. The moment I pick it up, it becomes a direct thread connecting my physical body, my consciousness, and whatever’s about to happen next. It demands all of my senses and my focus to tune in to the present moment and watch something new come to life.
Like many children of immigrants, I grew up with a sense of responsibility to make my parents’ sea-traverling journey worth it. My parents left their home, their families, and their culture in pursuit of the American Dream. They left their homelands of Kuwait and Sudan for Egypt, and from there, together pursued the opportunities and freedom that America promised.
As much as I desired to pursue something conventionally respected, my passion for crochet and fiber arts prevailed. While repeating my mantra of “follow the thread,” I found at the end of the proverbial thread a view of a bigger picture, one that showed me my parents’ sacrifices were worth it. Their pursuit of freedom and opportunity blessed me to pursue a passion and grow it into something to be proud of.
