We hope you are enjoying the Art of the Decoy at Duke Hospital. We were honored when Duke approached us about curating this exhibit. The history of the decoy is broad and deep. The Art of the Decoy at Duke Hospital
We hope you are enjoying the Art of the Decoy at Duke Hospital. We were honored when Duke approached us about curating this exhibit. The history of the decoy is broad and deep. The story that we primarily wanted to tell is that of the transformation of the decoy as a utilitarian object to that of a work of art.
Those who are drawn to decoys are, typically, equally drawn by lure of the outdoors. Fishing, hiking, and just enjoying the beauty of a clear day can also be seen in the eye of a finely carved duck. If this inspires you, you might be asking yourself, “how can I learn more?” We are so glad that you did.
Many of the decoys you have seen today will be offered for sale, at auction, in Leland Little’s Spring Sporting Art Auction on March 2, 2023. We invite you to come to our Hillsborough gallery and speak with our Sporting Art Director, Robbie Smith. Use our auction as a classroom to learn more – read the catalogues, learn about the carvers and how these ducks were used. You might just be inspired to bring one home.
Another great, and fun, way to get involved is to join us for our second annual Sporting Art Fair on Saturday, February 25th from 9:00am to 5:00pm. The Sporting Art Fair (or SAF 2023) is a community event for the entire family. Hosted on the grounds of Leland Little, this event is brought forth by a group of partners who are personally and professionally invested in the world of sporting art.
Expect to experience a day full of demonstrations, exhibitions, a tailgate market, activities for kids of all ages, great food, wine tastings, and a lot of fun. You will be able to preview all of the decoys that will be offered in the Spring Sporting Art Auction as well as the vehicles that will be offered in Leland Little's Luxury & Collector Vehicles Auction on March 8th.
In the meantime, please feel free to reach out to Robbie Smith with any questions or just plain curiosity. He is always happy to talk about ducks.
