I’ve always hoped that certain photographs of mine convey the same meaning to a viewer as they do to me. For instance, when I first printed this image I thought, “This photograph of a seven-year-old boy extending his arms outward in the early morning fog represents a new beginning.” And yet over time I’ve come to realize that photographs, no matter what the photographer’s intention, cannot be restricted to a single metaphorical interpretation. In its long journey from 1979 to the present, this image has served to represent not only a new beginning but the need for land conservancy, a poetic “gathering of sound, and the month of April.
