Quaking aspens (Populus tremuloides) are medium-sized (45 to 100 feet tall) deciduous trees that grow in clonal colonies. The flat, heart-shaped leaves flutter in any breeze, creating a pleasant rattling sound and causing the entire grove to appear to be quaking or trembling, giving rise to their scientific name. As shown in this image, the trees of an aspen colony will all turn colors at the same time. Image is framed with white mat and black frame.
