Working in new locations is both challenging and stimulating to Ms. Haskin, who continues to pursue her life-long goal of traveling to paint. “I have always looked to the world around me for inspiration,” she says. “A cast shadow on a brilliant white wall in Jamaica, a quality of light unique to Mediterranean Greece, another unique to New Mexico. I observe colors I have never seen before, driving through the countryside at dusk in North Carolina. Expressing these concepts in a graphic way is exciting and gratifying.
“Over the past fifteen years, I have worked in watercolor, handmade paper, pastel, and oil. In the works displayed here my emphasis has been on the pure pigments and varied applications of pastel.” She strives to capture the colors and textures unique to each environment where she travels: the lush tropical green and turquoise of the Caribbean, the warm yellow and deep ultramarine of the Atlantic coast.
A Michigan native now living in Chapel Hill, Ms. Haskin taught both art history and studio courses on the college level for sixteen years. She now coordinates the Arts Program at DUMC Eye Center.
