Urban Life in the Bold North
Artist: Naomi Tiry Salgado x
MSP Terminal 1, Gallery C6
April 2022 - April 2023
Naomi Tiry Salgado painted this series of cityscapes in downtown Minneapolis and St. Paul over the course of a year beginning in Fall 2019. What started out as a project to capture the beauty and iconic architecture of the Twin Cities became a soul-searching endeavor to capture a year like none other, because of the COVID-19 Pandemic.
In spring 2020, as the mood and subjects of her paintings began to change, so, too, did her style. Typically accustomed to painting en plein air (outside, on location), Naomi shifted to a more quarantine-like approach for this series, working mostly in her studio from photographs.
What has remained consistent since Fall 2019 has been Naomi’s use of the Golden Ratio, a mathematical number (i.e., 1.618…) that when laid out geometrically, has visual appeal. The Golden Ratio has been used in art and architecture as far back as Ancient Greece to create designs in a pleasing way. Naomi placed the focal points of these paintings in either the primary or secondary golden ratio, both vertically and horizontally. Some of the canvases in this series are Golden Rectangles where the ratio between the sides and top are also a Golden Ratio.
Naomi Tiry Salgado is an award-winning Twin Cities-based oil painter whose work has been exhibited in Minnesota and Wisconsin. Naomi is a former president of Outdoor Painters of Minnesota and has taught Art at Trinity Academy of Hudson.
