What is the offspring of creativity and existential pandemic dread? A Felt Menagerie fever dream of oversized fish and birds.
Inspired by natural history dioramas and Louis Renard’s wildly inaccurate 1754 fish illustrations, these felt creations emerge from the intersection of artistic exploration and extended isolation. These textile creatures–weighing as much as a third-grader–were designed in Adobe Illustrator and then brought to life in technicolor wool felt on a Cricut Maker 3.0. Hot glue, hairspray, and a curling iron (that longed for the days of simply curling hair) were used to attach the felt to pink insulation foam substrate. Each bit of felt became purposeful meditation. Each flower, fin or feather offered problem-solving and a deliberate pause from world chaos.
The Felt Menagerie explores how focused creative energy can provide unexpected mental freedom. These sculptures stand as evidence that isolation doesn’t just spark cabin fever–sometimes it spawns artistic obsessions guided by the question: “What if?”
