Nocturnes is a series of oil paintings by Minnesota-born artist Sophia Weisensel. The six paintings invite the viewer into nighttime scenes set in the small-town big-sky landscape of the American Midwest where Weisensel was raised.

Through her use of dark silhouettes and glowing lights, Weisensel illuminates familiar, nostalgic, and sometimes tense scenes of rural life. The series continues her exploration of coming of age, gender, relationship to place, and her own family dynamics.

Weisensel's work has been exhibited both in the US and internationally and is held in private collections in North America and Europe. She received her BFA from Bethany Lutheran College in 2019 and her MFA in painting from the New York Academy of Art in 2021. Weisensel now lives, paints, and teaches in Minneapolis, MN.
